The Bangladesh Health Professions Institute (BHPI) is an academic institute of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) and one of the pioneer institutions on the South-Asian subcontinent to train skilled human resources in the field of treatment and rehabilitation of person with disability since 1992. Bangladesh is a developing country of more than 160 million people with an enormous need of prosthetic and orthotic devices. The Prosthetics and Orthotics School has been set up within the existing functional structure of BHPI-CRP in February 2014 with generous support from GIZ, BGMEA, ICRC and Primark. The school runs a three years long diploma in medical technology (Prosthetics and Orthotics) program which is accredited by the Ministry of Health Bangladesh and Bangladesh State Medical Faculty.
Vision: to develop highly skilled health care professionals to deliver and improve health care provision and rehabilitation service nationally.
Highlights of our program-
This program offers sixteen different subjects in three years.
o first year: Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology and Parasitology, Community medicine, Physics, chemistry, English, Material and workshop technology.
o second year: Functional anatomy and Pathology, Functional Orthopedic management, Biomechanics and Mechanics, Computer science, Prosthetics and orthotics Science( all below knee prosthesis, spinal Orthosis, upper limb Orthosis)
o third year: Special prosthetics science (all above knee prosthesis and upper limb prosthesis), Special orthotics science (Lower limb Orthosis), and clinical practice and communication and professional ethics with 8 weeks of clinical placement.
All Prosthetics an orthotics related subjects are done with a harmony of theory and practice together with more emphasize on practical exposure.
Besides Prosthetics and Orthotics, students get an orientation to a world-class rehabilitation center where they can also learn about multi-specialized therapy, Assistive technology, and community-based rehabilitation service.
Evaluations are done through theoretical exams, OSPE/ OSCE, and case presentation.
An extensive internship of 6 months is followed carefully.
