In Canada, the CBCPO certification pathway accredited for Prosthetist-Orthotist recognition is operated by Orthotic Prosthetics Canada (OPC). The CBCPO Certification pathway includes two years of education in a Prosthetic and Orthotic program at an OPC accredited school, as well as a 3450 hour residency under the supervision of Certified practitioners. At the culmination of the residency, all candidates must pass the CBCPO Certification Orthotic and Prosthetic comprehensive written and practical examinations.
Orthotics Prosthetics Canada
Orthotics Prosthetics Canada (OPC) is the representative national organization for the orthotic and prosthetic profession. The CBCPO certification program operated by OPC is recognized nationally and internationally for its adherence to the highest standards for the certification of orthotic and prosthetic professionals. Its role is to protect the public and advance the profession through quality standards of practice, professional credentialing, education and awareness.
Certification is awarded as an attestation of competency for the public, those who require orthotic and prosthetic services, and those in other health professions. The awarding of certification provides the certified practitioner with an appropriate and meaningful recognition of professional competence.
CBCPO is the certification body and is an independent Board responsible for implementing and managing the certification processes. Successful candidates are CBCPO Certified through OPC. CBCPO is an arms length credentialing body which manages the certification of practitioners and confers the designations of:
Certified Orthotist CO(c)
Certified Prosthetist CP(c)
Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist CPO(c)
